Building a Simple Yet Effective Skincare Routine: My Personal Approach

I used to spend a fortune on skincare. I had a whole shelf of products — toners, essences, ampoules, serums, eye creams, sleeping masks — and my skin was still not where I wanted it to be. It was only when I stripped everything back and started simple that things actually started to improve.

If you're feeling overwhelmed by skincare or not sure where to start, this is for you. I'm going to share the exact routine I use, why I do each step, and what I've learned after years of trial and error.

Why Simple Beats Complicated (Every Time)

Here's the truth about skincare that nobody really talks about: more products doesn't mean better skin. In fact, layering too many actives can actually irritate your skin and make things worse. When I was using eight or nine products every night, my skin was reactive, red, and constantly breaking out.

When I simplified to four steps — cleanse, treat, moisturise, protect — my skin calmed down within two weeks. The single most important change I made was being consistent with fewer products rather than trying everything at once.

My Actual Morning Routine

I keep mornings short and purposeful. Here's what I do:

Step 1 — Cleanse gently: I splash my face with lukewarm water and use a gentle, low-foam cleanser. In the morning you don't need a heavy cleanse — you're just rinsing off what your skin produced overnight, not removing makeup or sunscreen.

Step 2 — Vitamin C serum: This changed my skin more than almost anything else. Vitamin C brightens, protects against environmental damage, and evens out skin tone over time. I apply it while my skin is still slightly damp so it absorbs better.

Step 3 — Moisturise: I use a lightweight moisturiser that doesn't sit heavily on my skin. Hydrated skin always looks better and holds makeup better too.

Step 4 — SPF: Non-negotiable. Every single day, even when it's cloudy, even in winter. SPF is the number one anti-ageing product that exists. If you're only going to add one thing to your routine, make it this.

My Evening Ritual

Evenings are when I slow down and take care of myself properly. I genuinely look forward to this part of my day.

Step 1 — Double cleanse: I start with a cleansing balm or micellar water to remove makeup and SPF, then follow with my gentle cleanser to fully clean the skin. Sleeping in SPF and makeup is one of the fastest ways to age your skin prematurely.

Step 2 — Facial massage: This is my favourite part. I apply a few drops of facial oil and spend about eight minutes massaging my face. I focus on my jawline, cheekbones, and the area under my eyes. Over time this has genuinely changed the shape of my face — my cheekbones look more defined and I barely get morning puffiness anymore. If you haven't tried facial massage, please start. It's free and it works.

Step 3 — Treatment: A few nights a week I'll use a retinol or an exfoliating acid. On other nights I keep it simple with just the moisturiser. Your skin doesn't need to be treated aggressively every single night — it also needs rest and nourishment.

Step 4 — Moisturise: I use a richer cream at night than in the morning. Our Collagen Jelly Face Cream is something I've been using during my massage sessions — it has a texture that's perfect for massage and leaves your skin feeling incredibly plump in the morning.

The Mistakes I Made So You Don't Have To

Looking back, I wasted a lot of time and money making mistakes that are really easy to avoid:

  • Skipping SPF: I cannot believe I used to do this. SPF is the most important step and I treated it as optional for years. Don't do this.
  • Changing products too often: Skincare needs time to work. Most actives take four to six weeks to show results. If you swap products every two weeks you'll never know what's actually helping.
  • Using too many actives at once: Vitamin C, retinol, AHA, BHA, niacinamide — not all of these should be used together. Keep it simple and introduce one new thing at a time.
  • Neglecting my neck: Your neck and chest age faster than your face and most people completely ignore them. Extend every product down your neck.

What Actually Made the Biggest Difference

If I had to pick three things that transformed my skin the most, they would be: consistent SPF every single day, daily facial massage, and drinking enough water. Two of those three things are completely free. Good skin is mostly about good habits, not expensive products.

Start small. Pick two or three products and use them consistently for a month before adding anything else. Your skin will thank you for it.
